On January 24, 2019, at the Ha Giang provincial Department of Science and Technology, the Ha Giang Provincial People’s Committee organized a meeting for the acceptance of the provincial project “Research and construction of the Dong Van Stone Plateau Global Geopark Museum of Nature, Ha Giang”, Code: DTKH.HG-04/16, from 2016 – 2018. Attending the meeting were representatives from the project implementation agency, the Vietnam Museum of Nature, including Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Trung Minh, General Director; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vu Van Lien, the head of the project; and the project members. The project was assessed excellent by the council for acceptance and evaluation of project.
The project was ordered by the Ha Giang Provincial People’s Committee for the Vietnam Museum of Nature, on the basis of the science and technology cooperation program between the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology and the Ha Giang Provincial People’s Committee. The results of the project are shown in the gallery of nature of the Dong Van Stone Plateau Global Geo-park at the Ha Giang Provincial Museum.
The Dong Van Stone Plateau Global Geo-park Museum of Nature stretches over 2,356 square kilometers, across the 4 districts of Quan Ba, Yen Minh, Dong Van and Meo Vac of Ha Giang province. The stone plateau was recognized as a Global Geo-park by the Advisory Council of the Global Geoparks Network of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in October 2010. After 4 years, in November 2014, UNESCO re-recognized the Dong Van Stone Plateau as a Global Geo-park in the 2015-2018 period. To ensure the re-evaluation for the next 4 years, one of the mandatory criteria is that Ha Giang must have a display space for the Stone Plateau.
Over the past two years, the project has been implemented and completed in time and the product has satisfied the requirements. Geological samples (rock, minerals, fossils) and biological samples (mushroom, plants, animals, insects) with more than 2000 specimens have been collected. The project’s script and display design have also been completed. The most important result of the project is to complete the Gallery of Nature of the Dong Van Stone Plateau Global Geo-park at the Ha Giang Provincial Museum with an area of 100 square meters.
A total of more than 600 geological and biological samples have been exhibited, showing the history of the formation of Dong Van Stone Plateau through the geological periods of the Great Palaeobiology and the Great Mesozoic, with fossil samples dating back to from 500 to 250 million years ago. In terms of organisms, the space shows the diversity and abundance of angiosperms, gymnosperms, mushroom, vertebrate animals (animals, birds, reptiles – amphibians, fish), and invertebrate animals (insects, snails). Of which, many species have high economic and scientific value and are endemic to Dong Van Stone Plateau.
The Gallery of Stone Plateau at the Ha Giang Provincial Museum was appraised and appreciated by UNESCO experts for the reevaluation of the Dong Van Stone Plateau Global Geo-park. The content and display of the space was also used by Ha Giang Province to be presented at the International Council of UNESCO in Italy and was highly appreciated.
According to the Council for the acceptance of the project’s assessment, the project has completed the criteria for UNESCO to re-evaluate and recognize the Global Geo-park. This is a highly effective project, positively received by the locality, with scientific and practical values as it introduces the history of the geological formation of the stone plateau, the evolution of the biological world and geological heritage of the stone plateau. The showroom and products of the project create highlights the Ha Giang Provincial Museum. The result is that the project contributes to promoting the nature, culture and people in Ha Giang Province in general and the Dong Van Stone Plateau Global Geopark in particular with domestic and foreign tourists.
