DG Azevêdo: Sweden is an important champion of multilateralism
Director-General Roberto Azevêdo praised Sweden’s global leadership during his visit to Stockholm on 23-24 March 2017, where he discussed the WTO’s future work with high-level government officials and private sector representatives. During his visit, the Director-General met with King Carl XVI Gustaf, Prime Minister Stefan Löfven, Deputy Prime Minister Isabella Lövin and Minister for EU Affairs and Trade Ann Linde.
DG Azevêdo said:
“Sweden is an important champion of multilateralism. The country is a constructive voice at the WTO, and a generous donor to many initiatives that help the poorest build their trading capacity.
“Of course, Sweden is also a leader in many other global fora, heading initiatives that can have a positive impact worldwide, such as Prime Minister Löfven’s Global Deal initiative, which is aimed at enhancing dialogue to improve labour standards across the world. Looking ahead, I am sure that Sweden’s engagement will be more important than ever as we seek to continue strengthening the multilateral trading system.
“Faced with a global scenario of low economic growth and a rise in anti-trade rhetoric, we have to ensure that the benefits of trade reach further and wider through new trade reforms. I count on Sweden’s leadership to help drive this progress forward at the WTO”.
As part of his visit, DG Azevêdo spoke at the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Sweden’s Annual General Meeting.
