APO’s Governing Body Meeting in Tehran

“Directing future productivity together” is the message from the Secretary-General of the Asian Productivity Organization at the APO’s Governing Body Meeting 2017 held in the Islamic Republic of Iran from 10-12 April 2017. This is the APO’s highest-level annual meeting with the participation of APO Secretariat, APO Director, and relevant advisors from member countries / economies. The Vietnamese delegation led by Mr. Nguyen Hoang Linh, Deputy General Director of the Directorate for Standards Metrology and Quality, attended the meeting.

Representing the Islamic Republic of Iran at the meeting, Vice President Jamshid Ansari shared the Iran’s policy of enhancing quality and productivity. Iran has faced serious economic challenges, including the global financial crisis, economic sanctions and fluctuations in international oil prices. Boosting productivity has been identified as a key strategy to address these issues, especially when the 2017 has been chosen as the year for “Economic, production and employment recovery”. He also emphasized that the Iranian government set the goal of improving productivity as one of the important base strategies aiming at helping the country overcome global challenges. With the overall goal of 8% growth per year for the next five years, Iran’s goal for the contribution of total factor productivity was 2.8%.

In the opening speech, APO President Dr. Elba S. Cruz said that Asia-Pacific member economies had demonstrated high adaptability in recent years and hoped that by 2017 all APO member economies would be able to maintain economic growth. For strong and competitive development, sustainable productivity growth would continue to be one of the top priorities for all countries. She also pointed out that to achieve the 2020 Roadmap, the APO would continue its efforts to improve the productivity and competitiveness of member countries.

At the plenary session, APO Secretary-General Santhi Kanoktanaporn presented the administrative and financial report of 2016 and the APO’s 2018 Action Plan. The meeting also discussed the selection of India as the focal point to build the IT knowledge sharing center in 2017 (APO Center of Excellence on IT for Industry 4.0). Within the framework of the meeting, the countries have presented and discussed the national quality and productivity orientation for 2017-2018. This is the foundation and orientation of APO activities in the coming time.

The Asian Productivity Organization (APO) was established on 11 May 1961 as a regional intergovernmental organization. The APO is nonpolitical, nonprofit, and nondiscriminatory. APO’s mission is to contribute to the sustainable socioeconomic development of Asia and the Pacific through enhancing productivity.
