WTO opens new Reference Centre in Cambodia

A new WTO Reference Centre was inaugurated in Phnom Penh by H.E. Ms Cham Nimul, Under-Secretary of State in Cambodia’s Ministry of Commerce, on 13 March 2017.

In her opening speech, Ms Nimul said that the Reference Centre will allow her government to disseminate information on the WTO and the multilateral trading system, to reach out to the business community and to better communicate the benefits and gains from trade for the Cambodian economy. Cambodia is taking the leadership role in the Least Developed Countries Group this year.

The WTO was represented by Dr Faustin Mukela Luanga, Head of the Asia and Pacific Regional Desk, and Ms Franziska Kirschke, Training Officer, from the Institute for Training and Technical Cooperation (ITTC). The inauguration was attended by around 80 representatives from the Ministry of Commerce, the Trade Training and Research Institute, the Ministry of Industry and Handicraft, the National Bank of Cambodia, the Council for the Development of Cambodia, the Young Entrepreneurs Association of Cambodia (YEAC), the Paññāsāstra University of Cambodia (PUC) and the National University of Management (NUM).

The Reference Centre was established with technical assistance from the WTO and will serve as a centre of information on WTO issues and international trade for government officials, the private sector, academic institutions and the general public.

After the official opening ceremony, the Ministry of Commerce, through the Trade Training and Research Institute, in collaboration with the WTO, organized a day-long seminar on the multilateral trading system and provided two days of training on WTO databases, document search facilities, trade-related information and other resources available in the Reference Centre. The training was well attended.
