Regional Trade Policy Course for Caribbean countries under way

Twenty-one participants from the Caribbean region are attending a two-month Regional Trade Policy Course in Bridgetown, Barbados, from 2 May to 23 June 2017. The course is being organized by the WTO in partnership with the Shridath Ramphal Centre for Trade, Law, Policy and Services at the University of the West Indies in Barbados.

The course opened with an address by Professor Clive Landis, Deputy Principal of the University of the West Indies (UWI), and by Mr Roberto Fiorentino, Counsellor in the WTO’s Institute for Training and Technical Cooperation. Professor Landis commended the WTO for its partnership with the UWI and underlined the importance of the course in helping government officials develop their understanding of trade policy. The course is the fourth to be organized in partnership with the UWI.

Regional Trade Policy Courses provide intermediate-level training and are specifically designed for government officials working on trade-related issues who have already undertaken basic WTO training.

The eight-week regional courses take place in Africa, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, Central Eastern Europe, Central Asia and the Caucasus, Arab-Middle East and the Caribbean and are organized by the WTO in partnership with regional academic institutions. Presentations are delivered by representatives of the WTO Secretariat, trade policy specialists and other experts from the region.

The courses cover the WTO agreements and other trade-related issues, including regional trade policy issues. Each course consists of a combination of presentations, case studies and exercises, ending with an exam.
