DG Azevêdo visits Beijing to discuss trade and infrastructure

Joining a number of world leaders and heads of international organisations in Beijing on 14 May to discuss China’s ‘One Belt One Road’ initiative, Director-General Roberto Azevêdo stressed the need for continued investment in infrastructure to support development, and that this must be underpinned by effective ‘soft infrastructure’ in the shape of shared rules and regulations under the WTO. The ‘One Belt One Road’ summit was hosted by Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China. During his visit DG Azevêdo held bilateral meetings with China’s Vice Premier, Wang Yang, Minister of Commerce Zhong Shan and Vice-Minister Wang Shouwen.

While in Beijing, DG Azevêdo also signed a partnership agreement with the Chinese government on their support for the WTO’s research work. The Director-General welcomed China’s generous support, which adds to a range of other member-funded initiatives at the WTO, focusing on how least-developed countries and developing countries can further integrate into the global trading system.
