Thai groups keen to expand in Vietnam

A number expressed a desire to boost their investment in Vietnam given the country’s improving investment environment.

Mr. Vikrom Kromadit, General Manager of AMATA Thailand, and Ms. Somhatai Panicheawa, General Director of AMATA Vietnam, thanked the Vietnamese Government for facilitating AMATA’s operations in the country for more than 20 years.

AMATA is currently promoting investment in its Long Thanh Hi-Tech Industrial Zone in southern Dong Nai province and preparing to invest in the “Smart City” project in northern Quang Ninh province on an area of nearly 6,000 ha.

It expects to create 100,000 jobs and attract more $9 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI). The AMATA leaders pledged to contribute to the development of Quang Ninh, hoping to invest in the “Smart City” project. It is currently deploying smart city projects in Thailand.

Prime Minister Phuc said that he supports AMATA’s activities in Vietnam and noted that the company’s leaders always pay major attention to land issues, site clearance, and environmental protection.

He emphasized that Quang Ninh province is undergoing strong administrative reform and asked provincial leaders attending the meeting to create favorable conditions for AMATA in its operations.

The Prime Minister also met with Mr. Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi, Chairman of TTC Holdings Group, whose subsidiaries include Big C, BJC, and Thai Beverage PLC and has also bought Metro Vietnam and Big C Thailand.

Mr. Sirivadhanabhakdi said he expects to invest long-term in Vietnam through the Big C supermarket chain and promote Vietnamese products, especially agriculture products.

He also hopes to invest in the Saigon Alcohol Beer and Beverages Corporation (Sabeco) and would appreciate support from the Vietnamese Government.

The Prime Minister suggested that Big C, as a major retailer, promote high quality Vietnamese agriculture products in the group’s supermarket network.

He also suggested that Big C continue to support Vietnamese citizens in Thailand, and said the Vietnamese Government would ensure its business environment supports foreign enterprises.

At the meeting with the Chairman and CEO of the Central Group, Mr. Tos Chirathivat, the Prime Minister said he evaluated the efforts of the group highly and noted its success in Vietnam.

He agreed to the group importing and selling Vietnamese agricultural products and expects it will also invest in high-end hotels in Vietnam.

In response, Mr. Chirathivat said the group expects to invest in retail and tourism in Vietnam and is willing to import Vietnamese agricultural products to sell at its supermarkets in Thailand.

Prime Minister Phuc also met other large groups in Thailand, where he said that the Vietnamese Government creates favorable conditions for foreign investors and considers recommendations from Thai investors and businesses in this regard. He also invited Thai corporations to invest in a number of fields in Vietnam.

Prime Minister Phuc paid an official visit to Thailand from August 17 to 19, where he also met with Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-o-cha.
