WTO hosts Thematic Course on Trade in Services Statistics, with focus on Africa

Twenty-seven statisticians from developing and least developed countries took part in a three-day course on Trade in Services Statistics at WTO headquarters on 6-10 November. The course focused on improving the collection and compilation of services statistics, particularly in Africa.

The training focused on service sectors of particular trade interest to participants’ home countries. The objective was to expand knowledge of best data collection and compilation practices in trade in services statistics and to share the challenges statisticians face in measuring trade in services. Participants benefited from interaction with national and international statistics experts.

Through hands-on-sessions, the statisticians also familiarized themselves with existing WTO databases on trade in services. Several participants made presentations on their national experiences.

Prior to the course, participants took a five-week TrainForTrade e-learning course on trade in services statistics developed in partnership with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development(UNCTAD). The course also benefited from the contributions of experts from the central banks of France and Italy, the Department of Statistics Malaysia, the International Trade Centre (ITC), the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)PARIS21, UNCTAD and the WTO.

An experts roundtable was held on the last day of the course to discuss synergies and improve technical assistance and statistical capacity building in trade in services statistics, particularly for the African region.
