DG Azevêdo in Brazil: Global Cooperation is essential to overcome economic challenges

Director-General Roberto Azevêdo wrapped up his visit to Brazil on March 15 at the World Economic Forum Latin America Summit in São Paulo, where he praised the sustained recovery of the Brazilian economy and discussed how trade and global cooperation can help countries overcome economic challenges and promote growth, development and job creation. During the summit, the Director-General took part in a key-note panel discussion entitled ‘A New Deal on Globalization’ and in a session entitled ‘E-commerce: expanding Trade Horizons’.

The Director-General earlier  visited Brasília, where he met with President Michel Temer, Foreign Affairs Minister Aloysio Nunes, Finance Minister Henrique Meirelles, as well as with other high-level government officials. In addition, in São Paulo, the Director General also met Acting Minister of Industry, Foreign Trade and Services Marcos Jorge de Lima, Governor Geraldo Alckmin and Mayor João Doria.

The Director-General said:

“Brazil is on a track towards full recovery, and the recent economic figures help to underline these positive prospects. Looking ahead, I am sure that trade and the work of the WTO can help support Brazil’s continued economic growth. I was pleased to hear from the Brazilian government about the importance of lowering barriers to open up and reinvigorate the country’s economy.

“As a strong supporter of the multilateral trading system, Brazil has an important role to play in strengthening the organization and ensuring that it is responsive to the needs of its members. In the current scenario, with many uncertainties on the international stage, global cooperation remains essential to overcome economic challenges and maintain the stability, predictability and transparency of the trading system that serves us all”.
