President Nyusi of Mozambique meets DG Azevêdo at the WTO
His Excellency Filipe Nyusi, President of Mozambique, met with Director-General Roberto Azevêdo at the WTO on 26 February to discuss how trade and the WTO can help Mozambique achieve its development goals, including economic diversification and global integration. President Nyusi was accompanied by the Minister for Foreign Affairs José Condugua António Pacheco, the Minister of Industry and Commerce Ragendra de Sousa and other senior officials.
President Nyusi emphasized the importance that Mozambique attaches to the work of the organization. He said:
“Mozambique is a strong supporter of the WTO and the multilateral trading system because we believe that trade can be a positive force and an engine for the country’s development. I call on all WTO members to continue working to ensure that the trading system delivers for growth and development, particularly for least-developed economies such as Mozambique.”
DG Azevêdo said:
“I am honoured to welcome President Nyusi to the WTO. Mozambique is an important member of the organization, and their leadership is important to ensure that the system continues to deliver to the needs of its members. As a least-developed country, Mozambique benefits from a number of WTO initiatives to help them build their capacity to trade, including the Enhanced Integrated Framework. This kind of support is essential in ensuring that Mozambique can fully reap the benefits of trade. I encourage Mozambique to continue making use of all the tools that the WTO offers to help the country meet its goals of diversification and global integration.
“As activity picks up at the WTO following our 11th Ministerial Conference in Buenos Aires, Mozambique’s engagement will be very important to help advance our work on a range of topics that are very important to the country. I look forward to working with President Nyusi and the government of Mozambique to this end.”
Mozambique has been a member of the WTO since 26 August 1995 and a member of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) since 27 July 1992.
