234/ Liechtenstein gives CHF 40,000 to enhance developing countries’ participation in world trade

22 November 2019

Liechtenstein is donating CHF 40,000 in 2019 to help developing and least-developed countries (LDCs) implement WTO agreements and to increase their trade negotiating skills.

Liechtenstein’s contribution to the DDA Global Trust Fund will finance training workshops for officials from developing countries and LDCs. Since the creation of the fund in 2001, over 2,800 workshops have been organized.

WTO Director-General Roberto Azevêdo said: “Improving the capacities of developing countries and LDCs to participate effectively in multilateral trade negotiations is at the heart of the WTO’s mission through the technical assistance pillar. This new contribution from Liechtenstein will be an important building block in the achievement of this objective.”

Liechtenstein’s WTO Ambassador, Peter Matt, said: “Through the continuation of our longstanding support to the DDAGTF, Liechtenstein aims to strengthen the participation of developing countries and LDCs in the multilateral trading system and increase their trading opportunities. Making trade more inclusive and sustainable is key to leaving no one behind, in accordance with the goal we all committed to under the UN Agenda 2030. Increasing the negotiating skills of poorer countries will be particularly important in the run-up to the 12th Ministerial Conference in June 2020.”

Overall, Liechtenstein has donated over CHF 600,000 to this trust fund in nearly 20 years.
