40/ Separate Customs Territory of Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu gives CHF 144,000 to help LDCs engage in Ministerial Conference

27 JULY 2021

The Separate Customs Territory of Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu (Chinese Taipei) is contributing CHF 144,000 to help least-developed countries (LDCs) participate in the 12th WTO Ministerial Conference, which will take place the week of 30 November 2021 in Geneva.

The LDCs Trust Fund is set up for each Ministerial Conference, the WTO’s top decision-making body. The contribution will help cover travel expenses (i.e. flight ticket and accommodation) for officials from these countries to participate in the 12th Ministerial Conference. Multiple WTO members contribute to this fund.

WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala said: “The participation of LDC trade officials in the 12th Ministerial Conference will be crucial to deliver concrete negotiated results, thereby helping spread the benefits of trade more widely. I thank Chinese Taipei for helping to ensure that multilateral negotiations are truly inclusive.”

Overall, Chinese Taipei has donated CHF 2.2 million to the various WTO trust funds over the past 20 years.

Chinese Taipei’s WTO Permanent Representative, Dr Chang-Fa Lo, said: “We continue to strongly support the multilateral trading system and we encourage all WTO members to keep working with DG Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala to ensure the WTO can further enhance the global trading system.”
