Cooperation Forum Asia-Europe (Asia – Europe Meeting, ASEM called) founded in 1996 on the initiative of Singapore, France and the active support of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). This is a forum for informal dialogue between the heads of state and head of government of the ASEM member countries, leaders of the European Union (EU) and the ASEAN Secretariat.
The objective of ASEM is to create “a new partnership relationship between Eurasian comprehensive because stronger growth” and “enhance mutual understanding between the people of two continents and establish close dialogue collaboration among equal partners. ”
Through expanded five times, ASEM’s growing, more than double the number of members (from 26 to 53 members), including 4 permanent member of the Security Council of the United Nations, 12 G20 countries, four countries with emerging economies including Brazil, Russia, India, China. ASEM accounts for about 63% of the world population, 57% of GDP and 68% of global trade. ASEM continues to attract the interest of many countries (Turkey and Ukraine is lobbying to join).
